This is what I've found too. Must be stepping on some concrete sand, or maybe concrete lets your shoes sink in a fraction of millimeter.

Crank Brothers cleats are a little better than SPD, since there's less area of the cleat that extends the full distance from the shoe. I would expect Time cleats to be about the same as CB.

If your cleats grind regularly on hard floors, be very careful you're not scratching the floor up.
