Freezing half is the best method I've found. I bought two allegedly insulated water bottles (Polar brand, i think) from REI last year, for about twice what an ordinary bottle costs, but they were disappointing. After half an hour to 40 minutes, the difference in temp between them and a regular bottle was barely discernible.
