New classic frame style bikes, or ones that have been extensively updated(ie, brifters) tend to be pricey- think rivendell, waterford. I would buy an older late 80's bike in good shape and ride it and see if you can adapt to bar end or downtube shifters if you do not have a large chunk of cash.
