The clamp diameter is the outside diameter of the handlebar in the center of the bar. The bars I've seen (admittedly not that many) have the clamp diameter printed on the bar somewhere. The standards I know of are 25.4, 26.0 and 31.8mm, so a rough measurement should tell you what it is as well.
thanks man. this is extremely helpful. i just measured c/c on the tubes in the drops and it's pretty much spot on 44cm -- i'm considering both the Ritchey WCS Classic and Salsa Short and Shallow bc of my short torso/arms and since both are calculated c/c looks like i'd need 44cm in both. i looked up the specs on the f4 and it's 31.8 clamp diameter so i'm good to go now. thanks again.
