It depends on the commute. I'm lucky to have half of my commute on a trail and a major divided highway with a HUGE shoulder and rolling hills. A lot of roads here resemble the moon, especially right after the winter. Side streets are a must for the commuter, the only problem is the suburbs are a labyrinth to get through, so planning and mapmyride.com help out a lot.
