You also might want to lube the chain. Lubing quiets a chain, and chain noise is pronounced as it snakes through the pulley.

300 miles is too early for pulley problems. Pulleys often have greased bearings and should last waaaay more than 300 miles.

Also, as Bill K says, you may need minor tweaking to take up normal cable stretch / housing compression.
