I guess I can see it on cheaper overstressed bags with thin straps.

Spend a little money for something with a good design behind it.
I'm not sure if you are saying that BaileyWorks or PAC bags have bad construction - from my experience between them and Chrome bags, PAC, then BaileyWorks, then some others, then Chrome. Strap padding isn't the issue. If the weight isn't balanced properly, it puts too much pressure in one place. That is why messenger bags are for riding, not walking. Unless you are riding in to much of an upright position, the weight should be more distributed on your bag. I'm sure I'm not the only person who has gotten nerve damage and had shoulder problems as a result of messenger bags. That's why you are starting to see an increased popularity in two strap bags made for riding.
