A long time ago I had "roll bars" in my truck bed, primarily for the purpose of hauling bikes. It worked better than any rack system I've seen around today. I could fit 4 bikes upright in the bed, and simply use bungees to secure them. I had pads on the roll bar so they wouldn't scratch. Unfortunately rollbars are no longer stylist in truck beds, so I guess you cant use this idea.
