just ride. your first year should be about creating a base or foundation of aerobic fitness. don't worry about miles, focus more on time. i can tell just from your post that you'll likely ride too hard too often right now.
see if the college coach will give you some advice. seel him out, tell him you want to be on the squad and that you're new and need to know what to do this year to prepare yourself. such advice will be priceless.
also pick up a copy of The Cyclists Training Bible by Joel Friel. It has lots of good information about how to train.
