Any set of clip-less pedals would be a good investment, even just your standard entry level pair.

As far as the mountain bike shoes vs. road shoes, if you are buying shoes and pedals go for a road pair. You get few advantages while riding in MTB shoes on a road bike and a lot of downfalls, primarily small pressure points on your feet.

On the other hand, I ride with MTB Shoes / Pedals just because I already had shoes from my MTB bike. However, after long rides my feet do start to hurt where the small clip attaches to the pedal / shoe.
