I fitted a Gore sealed gear cable to one bike. It came with a natty crimp cover to go over the cable end crimp. After crimping the cable, thought to myself the cover looked trick, so I put it on. Had second thoughts, maybe it would make my normal commuter bike look nice, which can be a worry. So found it I gave it a really good tug, I could get it back off, over the crimp itself, Then thought, ah blo, why would anyone want to steal a crimp cover? So put some glue in it so it wouldn't come off again, even though it was pretty good at holding itself on, and put it on.
A few days later someone stole it: the crimp cover. Yes someone stole a little rubber crimp cover. And part of it was still attached to the crimp.
