My SS was about $288 or so. Buy an old road bike and re-space the cassette, it is the best way to go. These generic "Single-speed specific" frames are just the cycling companies cashing in on people who don't know anything. For fixed, just scour eBay for something used and cheap.

Oh, and my current single speed cost $12 and a old BMX freewheel I found in the bottom of the box. Correction: $17. I sprung for some short chainring bolts.
