First of all, by "integrated" I mean the shift pod and brake lever are one unit. They can not be separated, so using the old integrated pod/lever won't work with V's real well as it's a center pull lever.

I did buy them locally. One LBS had 7 sp shift pods in stock for $35 a pair. Most other locals needed to order for the same cost.

Avid brake levers were $20, there are cheaper available (Tektro) but they feel like sh*t. Avids were worth the $5 to me, no question asked.

If you can't find them locally, look up www.universalcycles.com they have 7 speed shift pods.

8 speed may be found locally and will work, you just won't have the 8th gear. Ask about them when calling locally.

If you shop well, you should be able to get shift pods, brake levers, cables, housings and V brake assemblies for ~$100.

I already had my V brake assemblies and got the Avid levers, Shimano shifter pods (with cables and housing included) and both brake cables & housing for $65.
