Generally, on most forums it becomes a popularity contest, like on Facebook or MySpace, to see who has "the most" friends.
About the only benefit that I've ever seen of having a friend list on a vBulletin Board like BikeForum is if I send private messages to certain people on a regular basis, it makes it quicker to start the message.... or you can tell if your "friends" are online or not... other than that... nada...
