Welcome to the forum! I've never ridden a hybrid, but I have both a road and mountain bike. I've been mostly a road rider for many years and I tend to agree with that statement you made, that perhaps an out-and-out road bike is probably the way to go. If you get into some serious mileage, you'll have the right tool for the job! See if you can get some test rides on several road bikes at your local shop and it might help in making the final decision.
