Shimano Alfine 8 speed hub + Old school bar end shifters: Possible?

Sorry in advance if this has been asked a bunch or covered recently. I'm new to the forum and while I did try quite a few searches, I think it just takes time to figure out what the search engine wants in terms of producing the results one is looking for and knowing more bike vocabulary than I already know at the moment.

Anyway, I am working on a project '70's centurion road bike and I want to run the Shimano Alfine 8 speed internal gear hub, but I don't want to have to ghetto rig either the grip shifter or trigger shifter (both options for this hub) onto my Nitto moustache bars. I have seen some kind of "problem solver" piece which attaches to the neck for the grip shifter, but it looks terrible to me. Ultimately, what I want is to run just one of the bar end shifters I have on the bike now with the Shimano hub and cable.

*edit: Maybe use the new Shimano 8 speed bar end shifter instead of my old Suntours?

Can this be done?

TIA
