With your weight you can probably need a stiffer bike than most cyclists. You are also going to need stronger wheels like a Velocity Deep V or DT Swiss 1.2 or Mavic CXP33.

Test rides are difficult since tires and wheels make a significant difference in ride and handling. Get your LBS to set you up with as many bikes as possible and test ride with the same wheels. The longer the test ride the better. Problems show up on 60 mile rides that 30 mile rides give no indication of.

Get a professional fitting first to make sure you have the right size frame and to rule out needing custom.

With that budget you should end up with a really nice bike.
