I'm from Long Island, NY which is flat as all heck, but I spent a few hours on San Marcos Pass Rd (state route 154) from Los Olivos, up, over, and down into Santa Barbara in Cali. I was young and the descent was a little scary.
We don't usually descend 154 to SB, it is preferable to take Old San Marcos which is shorter, steeper, and winding, but less traffic. Although I will take 154 on occasion, especially if I want to end up downtown intead of near Goleta. I live a mile from the base of Old San Marcos.
