removing cable housings on frame

hey everyone, just had a quick question. I'm trying to build my first bike from just the frame, its an old 80's steel frame thats not worth very much, but its rust free and in good shape. I want to keep it simple and light and would like to use only a front brake. The problem is that the frame has those small metal tubes that hold the cable for the rear brake along the top tube. Has anyone had any experience removing these before? I'm sure i could just grind them off, but I'm worried about appearance. I plan on repainting the frame, so I'm not worried about messing up the paint.
