Riding with a SRAM Red cassette in the rain will not lead to mechanical failure. In fact, the conditions in which riding with a Red cassette is a-ok far outnumber those in which the cassette will be a hindrance.

I commute with a Red cassette and have never, ever, had an issue with debris getting stuck between the cogs.
