Does anyone actually track stand with their wheel facing away from their front foot? I just tried it, and it could be because I'm so used to the other way, but it threw my weight way off. Couldn't do it for the life of me.

Please explain how being able to do it four ways is any better than two.
I can hold it at a light long enough to get my bearing and make the corrections needed but it's so much more difficult. For me as long as I got it the "normal" way both L and R I'm usually good for any situation but sometimes in a jam you can't get your foot to the right spot and switching bars is a task once stopped in traffic. It's the same premise of backwards pushes you out forwards pushes in but switching your feet.
