Don't know if you're planning on using a rack when commuting but neither bike has braze-ons so attaching a rack could be tricky. That will also limit the type/style fender you can install.
I bought a cross bike for commuting in 2005.
Many commuters ride cross bikes. Have you asked the folks in the Commuting forum?
