Sydney, is correct. The Shimano freehub goes back to 1976 (5 and 6 speed) and has been consistently in the Shimano catalogue since that time. 1988 however, was the year that Shimano introduced the 8 speed freehub in the pro peleton. It become available to the public in the following year
