My Frejus has a 47/50 up front with a 14-24 FW and enjoy is a word that does not come to mind.
I think it has more to do with the capacity of the period der's. My pushrod Gran Sport front probably won't shift more than a 6 tooth difference (on a good day) and the rear is stamped 26 max.
