In situations like that, I rely on the wisdom of my dear Aunt Ler:
“When you encounter a feisty male, you need to be smart. Buck conventional wisdom, dismount and hoof it for a bit. You won’t be able to outride a fast deer anyway; you’ve horned in on his territory and no amount of doe is going to be able buy your way out of trouble. Avoid the rut in the trail, as it can cause you to fall and rack yourself painfully. Back away slowly then make tracks out of there.”
