On the other hand, I have often thought paint ball guns would be a nice "defense" for cyclists... mark up those cars who's drivers are acting in an ahole manner toward cyclists. The paint would indicate to both other cyclists and LEOs that the motorist within needs special attention.

The paint is temporary so they only have the mark until they arrive at their destination and wipe it off.
