Get a decent bicycle bell. They're loud, noticeable, and can fill a spaced-out driver with the panic that he's about to run over an 8yr old girl, so he/she will instinctively be more careful than he/she would if it was just another annoying cyclist.
Uh, bike bells may work in some places, but on crowded roads filled with cars... no way.
