In general a compact would rarely be a hinderance, but personally I prefer a standard crank for a variety of reasons, which only really apply to me.
After riding a standard crank for a a lot of years, followed by another few years on a compact; I think I prefer the good ol' 53/39 and 12-25 cassette.
