Lotek, your story reminds me of a scene from "The Untouchables," (o, no!) in which a older beat-cop (Sean Connery) stops a federal agent (Kevin Costner) and questions him because he's carrying a gun (concealed in his coat.) The agent says it's ok because he's a federal agent, so the cop lets him go.

"Wait a minute, you are letting me go without checking my identification? I said I was a federal agent, but how can you be sure?"

The cop replies, "Who would claim to be that, who was not?"

So, maybe there are subtle ways that cyclists check each other out that cues them in on whether they can trust each other, or red flags that signal caution. Maybe it's the parts you bought, or something you said.
