The CO2 cartridge has been around forever, and awhile back some simple genius figured out it could be used for an easy, light, tube inflation device to replace the frame pump. There's a variety of models on the market, some heavier than others, some easier to use. In theory, a single cartridge is good for more than one full inflation, but they tend to leak once the top seal is ruptured, so if you don't have a back-up cartridge, you can find yourself without enough CO2 (or any) to do the job the next time you have to use one.
