I am backpack person as well. I almost bought a messenger bag but got a backpack as a gift for Christmas, it's great. Messenger bags is all about style and looks and no comfort. Personally I am happy I didn't end with a messenger bag. If you are serious about commuting with stuff, get a backpack, a messenger bag is a total inconvenience. I know looks doesn't matter but riding with a messenger bag makes you look like a complete moron, just speaking the truth.
