Most locksmiths will tell you that it's not necessarily the brand or type of lock you use, just how much your lock job conveys a sense of security. If you use two big hulking steel u-locks, a thief is more likely to take a pass even if the steel isn't as hard as a smaller, more compact Kryptonite.

Generally I would say as long as you don't use any of those round key ones, u-locks generally repel thieves the best. Chains (and certainly not wires) don't seem to deter well at all.

EDIT: One thing I also thought of ... some lock makers will insure your bike up to a certain amount when you purchase and use their lock. So that is another thing to consider.
