Race bikes tend to (but not always) have more sloping top tubes, hence the shorter stand over height. That 2" inch rule is a bunch of crap IMO. I would look for something that fits you in the reach. As long as your crotch isn't resting on the top tube when you stand over it, your fine. And since you don't have giblets hanging around down there, your even more fine with about an inch or so stand over.

XC race bikes also tend to be lighter, with "higher" end components. It still all marketing though. So I take it the Kona you were looking at was a bust.
