Maybe this is true, but as long as the adjustment screws are tight, and the derailleur doesn't get bashed in some way, how could it end up in the spokes?

Oh, and the dork disk on my SLT pictured above is steel. I would take it off if I used the wheel for one of my bikes, and give the buyer the choice of keeping it on if I sold it.
