Gt gutterball vs. surly steamroller

i know that these are two exact opposite style bikes with the gt being more of a true track frame woth tighter geometry and aluminum where the surly is more relaxed n steel but the is what ive narrowed it down to. i dont have a material bias as i have an aluminum road bike and my current fixed is steel and like them both but i would use it for commuting this summer about five miles each way and then im going out to college in the fall so i would bring it out to cruise around there. what do you think? im feelin the tight geomety and responsiveness of the gt but also like the verstility of the surly.
