I don't have any of the old stuff. I was thinking I could measure from the flat surface with the square taper hole on the bike side to the chainring to tell me part of the story. What I still don't know is if the spindle sticks out evenly on both sides or if it sticks out more on the crank side. I also don't know how far the crank will slide onto the taper.
Any of the old spindles were asymmetrical by ~2mm or so. The VO spindles are symmetrical which means you'd need to add ~2mm to the overall length of your old spindle. I.E. if your old spindle was 114 you'd need a 116 VO BB. Your crankset would've had approximately the same spindle length as any of the Shimanos from that same era.
