I'd have to look at a map to be sure, but if memory serves, and it would take you south, but you could take Hines to Outer Drive (not horrible in the day), or West Chicago or Ann Arbor Trail (a pretty ride at least into the city itself) east quite a way. I grew up at Plymouth and Inkster, so those were close for me. I'm thinking there was a good road between 5 and 6 Mile too, but can't remember off the top of my head. Livonia and Redford are pretty grid oriented, so there are straight shots. It gets harder in Detroit. Schoolcraft also, the service road for I-96, isn't bad.
