I already have a mountain bike, so it's nice to have a common system. The tread of the mtb shoes allow the cleat to be recessed, which is good for walking. Most road shoes have the cleat proud of a smooth, minimal tread sole. Harder to walk in.

I use Specialized mtb shoes with a really stiff sole.
