An old road bike with 26" wheels probably actually has 26 3/8" (590mm) rims, not modern 26" MTV or even 571mm 650c. You definitely won't find a new set of fixed gear wheels in that size, and even if you did, it'd be a waste of cash. mtb wheels will fit but the existing brakes won't reach. Best plan would be using the existing freewheel hub and making sure your brakes are good.
if it is a schwinn it could have 597mm wheels too

use a bolt on cog and a disc hub and then you can have 26 inch fixed like the wheel I used to have on my
