Resisting is the same as pressure from pushing down. Yanking up hard may be a different story, as I don't see how that's something nature anticipated in your joint design.
Riding a reasonable gear, riding fixed gear is NOT bad for your knees. ****, my knees got much better after I started riding fixed.
