I am sure I am in the minority here but I am not a big believer in MUPs for biking, I think they are nice to have in parks so that people can recreate away from cars but I would much rather see a paved shoulder on the road. In NY many of our roads have a very nice shoulder and although there may be traffic moving at 55 mph bikes have plenty of room.
We've been adding both MUPs and bike lanes here in Dane County, WI. Madison's MUPs are very heavily used by cyclists commuting to work and the University. And almost every time a road is repaved (and there is room), they add a bike lane. Hundreds of miles of bike lanes now in place.
When I walk from my office to my parking space, I have to cross over the SW Bike Path MUP. Most nights I have to stop and wait several seconds for the bike traffic to clear before I can walk across it.
