Adaptive Cycling: Handcycles, Amputee Adaptation, Visual Impairment, and Other Needs Have a need for adaptive equipment to ride to compensate for a disability or loss of limb or function? This area is for discussion among those of us in the cycling world that are coming back from traumatic circumstances and tell the world, "No, you are not going to beat me down!"

Learned to ride a bike with your disability?

I teach Adapted Physical Education in a small community in Wisconsin. I recently began offering learn to ride a bike classes using Strider Bikes or standard bikes with their pedals removed, and the Pedal Magic curriculum. Some of my students learned slower than others, but they all made progress and gained confidence as they improved. I'm about to start a class with a larger group that includes kids with more severe disabilities and am requiring that their parents attend so they learn the approach. Though everyone is invited, not all families are ready to join in. So I'm hoping to hear the stories of people who learned to ride with a disability, and what riding a bicycle means to them. If you learned as a child with a disability, could you share what that was like for you as well?

Re-learning to ride following an event counts. Using adapted equipment counts. I want stories I can share with parents so that they will support their child's journey to acquiring this skill set. Thanks for any responses.
