Drunk driver causes death during Horsey 100

Lexington man dies after being hit by vehicle during Horsey Hundred cycling event; driver is arrested | Scott County | Kentucky.com

A drunk driver crossed into the oncoming lane. The cyclist that was killed was still in the bed of the truck when cops caught up with it at a trailer park.

Some of the comments say that several other cyclists were almost hit, and that the driver may not have had a valid license (and questionable status as a resident).

Prison time is definitely needed.

Mile 99 of 102. For cripes sake!

Another pathological impaired driver. Can't stop them until they kill someone or kill themselves. This kind of thing scares the daylights out of me because you can't rely on drivers being in adequate control of their vehicles. If only 1% of the drivers on the road at any one time are impaired, that means that I encounter a couple every time I ride. Definitely scary.

Mark was one of my riding buddies. We last rode together a few weeks ago at the Three Mountain Challenge in Chattanooga. Mark is on the far right. I'm the tall guy in the back.

I didn't ride Saturday, as I was working the Horsey event all weekend. As a cyclist, you try not to think about these possibilities, but I'm struggling with the thought that if I had been on the road that day, I would have been pedaling right beside Mark. As I type this, I can see my bike propped up against the wall. I know that I need to go out and get the first ride after this under my belt, but I'm not sure I'm ready yet.

WOW, just wow! That hit a little to close to home.

I sometimes think in this kind of situation that maybe prison time isn't enough . . . .

dpeters11 05-25-15 04:26 PM

This article confirms some aspects. The driver had no license or ssn, had an open beer in the truck and told police he had 6 beers prior and smoked pot.

Well, prison time is a good start, since we don't allow dragging behind a horse anymore.

rydabent 05-26-15 07:22 AM

Well at least the killer is in jail. Too often that doesnt happen.

Christ. Did this creep do anything which is legal?

I guess when you allow people to be here illegally, we should not be surprised when they break all the other laws too.

Well, there are full blooded Americans that would do this too. But it all adds to it and makes it "easier" to throw in the maximum sentences and not have it reduced or a jury that doesn't agree for some reason.

And it very easily could have been worse. Since it was an organized ride, he wasn't the only rider in the area. At least two others were right there but were able to get out of the path in time.

I'm just flabbergasted by the number of laws broken here. Drinking, driving, illegal drug use, no license, illegal entry....like I said, what did this guy do that was legal?

Yes, just had a local motorist hit and kill a pedestrian the other day, there were no witnesses to the collision, so the motorist left the scene of the collision, but left identifiable vehicle debris behind. Rumor has it, that some time after she arrived back at her home, she and her dog cleaned the front end of her car of body tissue. She contacted law enforcement, only after a major media blitz in an attempt to locate her car, using the description from the vehicle debris.

Do you really want to go here? Maybe just bow out from this thread gracefully...

corrado33 05-26-15 10:11 AM

If the man was an illegal immigrant, and broke so many laws, would he not simply be deported? Serious question, not trying to start anything. I really don't know what happens to people who are here illegally and commit crimes.

Some people are going to commit crimes regardless of the threat of jail time. Whether they're too stupid to contemplate the consequences of their actions, or simply don't care, we'll never know. That's just how it is. The death penalty is unfortunately too expensive to use and doesn't dissuade crimes anyway according to research that I'm not going to google. (I have looked it up before though.)

What a tragic story. Sorry for your loss, but I'm glad you are safe.

I read about the driver having previous convictions for DUI as well. He should have never been on the road. Terrible deal.

By all accounts, Jim Jones was one of the nicest guys you could hope to meet.

Hitler was reputedly quite a sweetheart to women and dogs.

Getting a bit tired of the "good kid who made one little mistake" excuse.

They go to jail like anyone else. Deported after they serve their time.

Just like Ted Bundy, and John Wayne Gacy. But that is beside the point.

*While glossing over the fact they keep making the same little mistake over and over again. This guy had 4 prior DUIs...that they know of.

Roughstuff 05-29-15 11:36 AM

It seems like most DUI charges are not the first....often the 4th, 5th, etc. Enforcement after the first would seem to me to be a priority.

A nice thing about group rides is the "convoy" effect of making sure something like this has witnesses and prosecution. That is scant solace to those who lost a good person and friend: but it provides closure and deterrence.
