Yes, I started this.

The city of Buffalo, and the group GoBikeBuffalo is holding a big campaign to increase biking in the area. They are adding bike lanes, new awareness laws and campaigns, and so on. However, there is one glaring factor the city is missing...nowhere to park the bikes. Sure, some businesses installed racks, but most have not, so we riders have to find a nice tree or fence, out of our way and inviting people to steal our bikes. So, I started this petition to get the City to fund more racks in public areas. The group GoBikeBuffalo already offers racks to businesses, why cant the city use more money out of the campaign to put some up themselves.


Anyway, would you guys take the time to sign the petition? Its pretty lame, I know, but I would like to find a decent place to put my bike, not a tree in the middle of a parking lot.

Buffalo might emulate what NYC did for a number of years (maybe still do) and offer businesses free racks on request. In NYC, all a business had to do was ask (file an application) and show where the rack could go, and the city would send a crew to install it (FREE). The logic is that people on site know best what's needed on their block.

If dough is scarce (and it always is) racks can be financed on some kind of shared cost formula, which not only stretches available dollars, but ensures that racks are placed where people are willing to commit some of their own dough.

BTW- not to nit pick, but the photo in your link is a perfect example of how and why not to install racks. The rack is parallel to the sidewalk, meaning the bikes would be perpendicular if the rack is used as designed. Instead one committed bicycle commuter/utility rider (based on the bike) placed his bike lengthwise along the rack essentially making it impossible for any more than one other bike to use the rack. So thanks to him, a rack that should hold a number o bikes has the capacity reduced to two. Give that person 2 gold stars (or maybe a parking ticket) for being a rack hog.
