Should these cyclists be arrested?

I stopped counting how many offenses and dangerous maneuvers they made. Everything from sliding in and out of lanes with little to no warning to cars behind them, to racing through crosswalks full of people.

It is sad that road users on motorized vehicles get arrested or fined for the smallest things, while cyclists in general get away with pretty much anything. As a cyclist I expect to be treated equally but I also welcome the responsibilities and consequences that come with that. The law is behind when it comes to that and cyclists like these belong in jail right next to drunken drivers. The worst part of it all is that if a car crashes into one of these idiots, its the driver who gets in trouble.

People don't bike regularly get it wrong. The background music of the video is also misleading. Most the maneuvers are calculated, and not reckless. It will be a better world if (or when) more people bike than drive. Also, I think only the very skilled cyclists do things like those shown in the video.

There are the old, and there are the bold, but there very few of the old and bold. I didn't notice any of the cyclists in the video sporting a head full of gray hair.

It says Summer and the posting date is Jan. 2014, meaning the video is at least TWO YEARS OLD.

It's not likely to happen soon.

BTW It's not ARREST, it's CITE.

wow. people defending criminals. I wonder what the same people would say if drivers were defending wreckless drivers. It doesn't matter if these idiots are skilled or not, if this is the "nature" of the race or if this particular video was shot 2 years ago. It happens every day. And I am aware that far from all cyclists behave this way but this the extreme that underlines the problem of cyclists often being above the law and getting away with crimes that other road users would never get away with. It is illegal, it is dangerous and defending such behaviour as a cyclist is not promoting cycling but quite the opposite. These people are wreckless and selfish criminals that are putting other people's lives and property in danger.

They're putting themselves in the greatest danger. You can do far more damage to others driving a car or in a truck, and there's considerably less risk to driver.

The next race starts in Morningside Park on July 4th at Noon. You should let the NYPD know about it. I'm sure they will care.

Irrelevant.

You are allowed by law to injure yourself and destroy your own property. You aren't allowed to injury other or damage other people's property.

Basically, the law is more concerned about the affects of your action on other people than with the affects of your actions on youself.

Also, the way traffic works is by cooperating and following the same rules consistently.

Hey troll, people DO defend reckless drivers... all the time. Consider for a moment that not only do most drivers speed, thus violate the law, but drivers also kill some 30,000 people a year...

They should be ticketed just as every driver who treats a speed limit as merely a suggested minimum.

Actually looks a little tamer & slower than this video of a NYC messenger race. Older clip & not as good of video, but I'll bet this became the Alley Cat

The worst part of it all is that if a car crashes into one of these idiots, its the driver who gets in trouble.
Only if they were found to be at fault... and because nearly everyone is a motorist, the system is heavily biased in their favor.

This is an unsanctioned competitive event on public roads. The way they ride absolutely puts other people in danger. Being a hothead too lazy or not good enough to compete in real races does not impress me.

Should we talk about the lackadaisical attitudes cyclists have toward the law under excuse of not endangering anyone but themselves? Sure, let's talk about it. Whenever you run a red light, go the wrong way, or just turn off your brain and do any one of other thousand of moves that can put a pedestrian or another cyclist in a hospital, you are in the wrong. The more people ride (and there are a lot now), the higher that risk is. So if you think it's okay, think again. If you're doing it yourself, please stop before you hurt someone.

Last summer I got taken out by a skateboarder going the wrong way into a red light, as I turned the corner, not expecting someone to be there traveling in that direction. I still feel the effects of it in my body. It could have been worse. The skateboarder did not initially think he did anything wrong, until police spoke to him. Sometimes I confront riders who endanger me going the wrong way. Almost none of them cares. And when I see articles like this, it makes me want to not ride anymore. For a while now, living and commuting in Brooklyn, NY, in terms of safety, I have become more comfortable with auto traffic, than other cyclists.

I think that they should be given citations for all of the laws they broke, yes. Being a cyclist doesn't give you permission to go the wrong way on a one way street or cross the double yellow. These "cyclists" give cyclists a bad name.

Yes, I realize that's the point of this race, and it's probably exhilarating, but it's still very illegal. Whether or not the police care about it is another thing entirely.

This is similar to street races in cars. Most people that drive cars do not participate in illegal street racing. The only thing most of us have in common with the group in the video is that we ride bikes.

Sure it's similar, in the same sense that hail is similar to carpet bombs. To be honest, their "race" looked quite a bit like my commute in the SF Bay Area many years ago, except that there weren't any other bikes where I rode.

130 pedestrians were killed in 2014, 180 in 2013. One of those was killed by a cyclist. Where is the crisis?

There are a lot of insane drivers in NYC, they have actually started working on that, but there is a long way to go. The guys in the OP's vid are not likely to hit anyone, it might look like it to the uninitiated.
