Could have been a bike... it wasn't, but it could have been. After all, she really wasn't paying attention...

I'd call that a major distraction...

And no, it wasn't as if she announced why she happened to crash into the van in front of her...

Oh, well at least the evidence was easily collected... no warrant needed.

Thus why at lights I pull up beside cars rather than directly behind them. A car-sandwich with me in the middle is not my idea of a good day

Don't you know that bicycling has become much more dangerous for cyclists ever since electric "sex toys" hit the market? Just because there is no data collection and no evidence of increased cyclist risk doesn't mean scads of drivers are not driving distracted by these evil devices. Whatsa matter wit you?

This incident should be all the proof you need to post on BF a least hundred more screeds/rants about the increased danger to cyclists from this distracting device.:lol:

And you just never know what the folks in the car behind you are doing...

Speaking of women and not knowing what they might be doing... I had a close call with a little car yesterday. I was in the sharrow lane (right lane, with markings) when this little car suddenly makes a rather poor U turn and kinda swerves a bit into my lane before slowly rolling toward the red light. Young lady in the passenger seat was quite busy doing something on her large smartphone looking device. Both young ladies looked quite animated... jabbering back and forth, then I notice the smartphone in the driver's hand... she too was busy, holding her phone low, glancing up just before she came to a stop.

Both were about "new driver" age, and both intent on anything but driving. Sigh.

And of course I doubt any driver is telling cops... oh yes oh yes oh yes... indeed I do have a sex toy up in my private parts...

In Ontario, I believe the wording of the 'distracted driving' law is that 'handheld electronics' are not to be used by the driver.

14" silicone schlong = OK; pocket rocket = illegal.

While anything could happen, a stopped motor vehicle is more likely to be hit from behind than a bike.

...Distracted motorist glances up, their brain registers just another motor vehicle traveling at MV speed, and they go back to playing with toy of choice. A lit up cyclist in the middle of the lane, on the other hand, shocks 'em back to reality, simply because it is so unusual. Bells and whistles go off in the primitive part of their brain, causing them to react. Plus motorists know cyclist will usually be traveling at a lower rate of speed... another red flag.

Well, that's what is supposed to happen... but apparently some folks can't even see well lit up trash trucks, or police cars, and plow right into them. I think stopping to the right of stopped traffic is perhaps the best solution...

Oh and regarding the "so much fear" comment... well let's just call it caution, and it comes from observing so much idiocy... You just can't make this stuff up.

This stuff doesn't keep me off the road, it just gives me more reasons to keep well alert. Of course that does take some of the joy out of "just riding along" out on street... riding.

The authors consider SWD to be an under-reported in-vehicle distraction....

All this goes to suggest that distracted driving is now, and always has been a risk to all road users. To point out one devices or type of device is to shortchange all the other ways that drivers, pedestrians, and even bicyclists don't always pay attention 100% to whats going on around them while using roads.

To think that its so much worse now is just discounting all the 1970's fry-munching, radio tuning, 8 track searching, paper reading, hair combing, lipstick applying, digging for the lit dropped cigarette that I had to deal with when I started cycling.

OK there are a lot of possible distractions out there... Do we need to add one more, one that demands visual attention... IE the smartphone with texting on a touch screen?

Some of the stuff you mentioned is easily done by touch... I tune the radio in my car all the time without EVER looking at it... those buttons are easy to feel-reach and my stations are all programmed. Same with fries... you reach in the bag and grab a few.

Now the makeup and reading really do take things to a new level... as does shaving in the car (although clean shaving can be done without ever looking).

But the point is, again smart phones and touch screens demand visual attention.

Heck even having sex with a toy doesn't demand visual attention... ;)

Isolated incident. I believe her iPhone was in the shop getting repaired and her eCig battery went dead on the same day.

No doubt the vibe ringer was all worn out...

If that woman ever drives again, the system sucks. I'm sure she was driving an hour later. The system sucks.

My wife has taken to calling out the phone-using drivers as "playing with their vibrators". They even hold them on their crotch, so I guess she has a point.

Well, it's not like she killed someone... she just dented some metal and wore out some batteries.

Some sex toys have a remote with lots of different settings. Went out with a girl once who showed me what I'd be replacing for the evening. I'm pretty sure I don't have that many options. Speed, intensity, pulse patterns, sleep timer (Seems to me it's not much use if you can fall asleep.) and some preset routines. Never thought getting off could be that complex.

Well, when you can reach that peak over and over and over again... no doubt there is a market for all sorts of things.

Personally, I just roll over and go to sleep.
