Local Radio Show Suggests "Buzzing" Cyclists

There is a radio station in the DFW area called "The FAN" (105.3 FM). Their phone number is: 214-525-7000. Tuesday night, on the show called "K&C Masterpiece," Kevin & Colby thought it would be funny to say cyclists shouldn't be allowed on the roads and it would be okay to buzz them and if something happened it's their fault. The segment happened between 9:15 - 9:20pm.

They continue to joke about it on their Facebook page today:

Several local cycling clubs have taken to discussing this today and are concerned this will cause an escalation in potentially dangerous interactions with drivers and cyclists in the area.

Anyone have any advice on what can be done in response to this?

Every 5 years or so some @zzhat DJ does this. It usually ends up with a forced apology and retraction due to pressure from sympathetic listeners. A dozen eggs on the radio station front door might not hurt either.

Personally, I would stop short of vandalizing their personal vehicles or assaulting them in any way, but those "Second Amendment people"...??? ;)

Get a list of the radio station's advertisers, and picket them.

The local bike clubs should write to the show's advertisers. Or take some direct action. Show up en masse at the radio station on their bikes and call in the local TV stations about the protest.

Hit them with a personal injury lawsuit next time someone in the area is buzzed and hit by a listener of the show.

Sadly, they are likely at the peak of their careers doing idiot-talk third generation Opey and Anthony rip-off. Something they work hard not to recognize, yet likely fear late at night. Likely, one day they will be found working in minimum wage jobs in building maintenance, cursing the government they depend on, telling their colleagues how friggin' great their show used to be "back then," and still not sure why they got cancelled.

BTW, it's generally considered really, really unhealthy when your neck extends out beyond your jaw and your ears. These guys should be more concerned about their own health.

I looked at their Facebook page. Unless you know where it is on their Facebook page, where they are still saying it. I would love to know. I only see stuff about the Rangers.

They got some serious flack today. The VP has been calling people personally and apologizing. They've taken everything down from the Facebook page and they're going to issue an apology on tonight's show.

If Texas has a safe passing law, and depending on EXACTLY what they said, they might have been advocating breaking the law. The place to take complaints is the FCC which might levy a stiff fine against the station. A stiff fine will encourage the station to keep a lid on this nonsense.

Also if you have a bike friendly legislator or member of the House or Senate, they might take up the cause and noise form those quarters will move the FCC to act.

Even with the apology coming, contact the advertisers. Losing money over this type of BS will encourage the station to fire them.

Look at the visitor posts on their page. According to the posters, these two have attracted attention worldwide for this.

Hmmm......Do they put a a copy of the show, on the station's website. For people to listen to. That don't live in the station's transmission range?

Even if they do make an apology, it'll likely be nothing but a 5 second canned response, and moved on from in a hurry.

Oh, so another "two dorks and a ditz" show that couldn't afford a ditz for the diversity angle?

Told ya. Every few years some animated talking d-bags get spanked for this exact thing. Search the BF archives.

A week off without pay would be nice too.

Just the standard response from a 'business' that offers an apology. Without an admittance of guilt.

KC Masterpiece is a barbecue sauce which is marketed by the HV Food Products Company, which is a subsidiary of the Clorox Company. Thanks wikipedia!

You sir are correct. Look at their facebook page. Typical "I'm sorry for what I said" apology.

fietsbob 08-12-16 11:37 AM

You live in DFW, so I dont Have to.. Thankfully.

MMACH 5 08-12-16 02:15 PM

The Dallas Critical Mass group is talking about taking this month's ride up to the radio station. They are reaching out to the station to see if they can turn it into a positive event. Maybe even get them to air some cycling PSAs on their station.

Probably the standard non-apology of "If anyone was offended, I'm sorry."

Invite/dare the radio guys to ride along on a Critical Mass or other group ride around downtown. Actually riding in traffic tends to change the perceptions some folks have about bicycling and cyclists.

Paul Barnard 08-14-16 04:49 PM

Take a look at the FB profiles of those speaking out in support of the hosts and against the bicyclists. Doing so only affirms my prejudices.

I'd assume that it would only reaffirm most of their beliefs that bicycles do not belong in traffic and anyone riding there is an idiot. That seems to be a prevalent opinion and getting terrified by traffic is only going to reinforce it.

These people seem to think that it's their duty to "teach people lessons."
