Video of driver going postal on cyclist in Corona del Mar, CA

Poster reports NBPD would not do anything. I spoke with a KCAL reporter who called them. They told her they are investigating, FWIW.

link shows in preview but not in actual message. Here it is inside the quotes.

Pretty sad display. But is an example of why I dislike sharrows, too many people think they mean that you should "get out of my way".

Trump supporter right there. I'm not expressing an opinion on the politics, just stating what was said in the video.

"Share the road" is open to a wide range of interpretation by motorists also. To most motorists, share the road means when they roar up behind me I should get the Hell out of their way in order to share. Sharrows are redundant symbols that only works with motorists educated on their meaning. Maybe. If I already have a right to be on the road, why do I need signs and symbols on CERTAIN roads?

Absolutely. I much prefer the "Bikes May Use Full Lane" signs.

I've ridden this very same stretch of Pacific Coast Highway many times and always take the right lane. Sometimes solo, most often with a small group, and have never had a problem. It is congested enough there that we are usually soft-pedaling and on our brakes to pace the car in front of us. I guess "share the road" would mean those slow cars should get out of our way!

WRONG. Odd how it is the Trump supporters getting assaulted by Dems. He is just a Dem expressing his wrong headed view of Trump rather than an actual Trump supporter.

Said he was a surfer, then acts like everyone else should stay away. Reminds me of the articles about surfers thinking they own a section of public beach.

I bet surfer dude thinks he owns the ocean as well and treats other surfers the same way. "I am a local surfer and you are new here - get off my surf before I kill you".

In Hawaii and California, the worst motorist towards cyclist I have crossed paths with have surf racks on or boards in the vehicles.

Local news station tracked down the road rager and put him on the evening news. He is "very embarrassed." Police are investigating.

No apology to the cyclist, just an apology for his choice of words.

Good on the news team for tracking him down.

"I didn't know the law..."

Seems he needs a remedial driving class and needs to actually read the CA driving code. Maybe some judge will assign him that detail.

Of course the irony of "I didn't know the law" is that one still doesn't get to run over folks that you feel are blocking the way... that is the part that really chaps my hide... that some motorists feel that they get to just mow down anyone that isn't conforming to their thinking of road use... and that is clearly wrong.

We don't see video of what caused the stop. Sharrows don't mean biker has right over cars. It means share the road.
What I mean, ride to the right when possible, take the lane when parked cars are a problem.
I don't believe the word "Sharrow" is in the CA. DMV handbook, or anywhere in the CA. Vehicle Code.
Regardless..... when somebody gets out of the car to confront you... that's an act of aggression, and should be dealt with appropriately.

If you look at Mark's video at 1:54, you'll see exactly *why* sharrows help. The person on the bicycle rides right over the sharrow. Research has repeatedly shown that people on bicycles are more likely to ride over sharrows and that helps keep a safe distance from doors if sharrows are present.

I ride that stretch of road regularly. The right lane is narrow and there is onstreet parking the whole way. There is nowhere for a bike to ride except out in the middle of the right lane, which is what the rider was doing. This is the law here in CA, regardless of the presence of sharrows. Sharrows are just additional information, they do not indicate some special zone where the rules are different.

It's a two lane road with parked cars along the side.... "share" in this case means that the cyclist gets to use the right lane and motorists get to use the left lane. It is that simple. There is no "riding to the right" unless you want to ride in the door zone and get bonked by someone opening the door. PCH is like that through many of the So Cal beach towns.

There is nowhere to safely ride except in the right lane.

But take a look at 01:18 in the CBS story to see the person on a road bike ride *way* too close to the parked car.
The "T" parking markers indicating the door zone didn't help this person.
The sharrows didn't help this person.

It is the bullies like Robert who keep people on bicycles riding in the door zone.

Usually, bullies like Robert don't have to get out of their car and assault people.

Bullies like Robert usually "just" close pass, honk and harass people on bicycles.

I'm not so sure. He could have been referring to "pulling trump" as in a card game, i.e. "pulling my trump card." Not to argue that that's not how a certain major political candidate's followers act, but that's for a different forum.

I love how Grade A A-holes like this are always sorry after they get caught. You know as well as I do that he'd been totally unapologetic about it and probably even bragging to his buddies had it not gotten widespread attention.

And "I'm sorry for my choice of words" is a standard non-apology apology which makes it sound like he was in the right but he shouldn't have used harsh language.
