OTOH, it does tend to give them a significant amount of non-driving time to think about whether next time they're really going to save enough time to be worth the risk while they're waiting for their injuries to heal.

I didn't see anyone bring this up so I will; what if she'd been on a motorcycle? What if she'd been in a smaller car?

Nah; it was just that his bones and organs dissipated most of the impact by shattering and rupturing.

Looking at that one web site's article that 100 yard stretch of road is a death trap for cyclists. She was riding up a narrow road with a slight blind hill with a passing lane for the other side. My guess is the pickup driver initiated the pass before his side of the hill and she appeared "out of nowhere". Not sure running lights would have helped her here.

Tragic. The State should re-line that stretch of road with double yellow lines considering it's a blind hill.

I posted some photos and other info at #31 and #34. The street view on #34 now has a ghost bike there.

If you go west on Google you'll see an S bend that goes over railroad tracks, then the road crests a hill. The pickup pulled out to pass the instant he crested the hill and hit the passing zone, apparently without due caution, and hit the gas pedal. The impact spot is just over a 2nd rise that apparently isn't high enough to warrant a "no passing zone" according to DOT.

Well, honestly, I think the sentencing is as good as you're ever going to get. Bearing in mind that the guy wasn't impaired, has no history of reckless driving, etc, expecting jail time is just wishful thinking.

At least the guy lost his license. That's the best I generally hope for. What drives me spare is when someone kills someone else and they get no time and don't even have their license suspended.
