DVP closed this weekend

Torontonians will know what I'm talking about. I mark it on my calendar to make sure I ride on the road this day.

I've taken advantage of the closure by riding along Lawrence Avenue East where without being bothered by motorists trying to get in the highway.

I tried a couple of experiments. One pickup truck, even though he discovered he had to change lanes, still tried to swipe me with a close pass. That was when I had only trunk bag.

Next I loaded the pannier on the left side but hung another bag on it to make it look bulky. Then I mounted a two-foot long cardboard tube on my rack protruding to the left. The motorists who passed me gave good clearance. But the tube made it difficult to mount my bike. I think I'll be looking for something flexible.

Will be interesting to see what happens when the DVP becomes a Toll Road.

You know, a simple orange Fiberglas driveway marker zip-tied to the seat rails will give you an instant 1m space between you and traffic. Hose-clamp something sharp and visible on the end, and you'll get even more room! I used to call mine my "paint sample collector".

BTW, I've always wondered just WHO "Don" was........

And no one else will know what "closing DVP" means or what you are talking about.
